Poliovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the Picornavirus family, characterized by their small RNA genome (7.2bk to 8.5 kb). Poliovirus is a enterovirus which primarily infects the gastroentestinal assiciated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and can eventually spread to the central nervous system, causing paralysis. Mortality, though very rare, is usually due to respiratory failure by paralysis of the intercostal muscles and diaphragm. There are three separate types of the virus: Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.
